NOTE: I was really excited to find this concert available on CDR. My excitement was tempered considerably after listening to the first 30 seconds of the recording. I must say that the person who recorded this show is probably the noisiest bootlegger I have ever heard. It is understandable when people around the recorder can be heard on the bootleg -- after all, the recorder cannot prevent others from yelling and screaming. However, most recorders have the common sense to shut their own mouths while taping a concert. This person obviously did not. It sounds like he or she brought an entire entourage of friends and all of them can be heard quite distinctly at various points of the recording.
Unfortunately, probably the worst instance occurs during the very same segment of "One" that I use for my MP3 sample. I pride myself in using the same segment, regardless of noise or defect, from every bootleg so that I cannot be accused of selecting the best sounding segment to make any given recording sound more attractive. However, this instance called for extreme measures. During the given verse, the recorder actually puts the microphone right in front of his friends and they each sing a few words. This results in such a debacle that the music can barely be heard. Therefore, I have decided to extend the MP3 sample and include the 20 seconds previous to the segment normally documented.
If you are still reading this, I congratulate
you! Not many people are going to bother reading this far, having
already come to the conclusion that they would rather pursue some other
bootleg. Unfortunately, I am only able to reward your perseverance
with more detractions. Talking can be heard in the foreground for
considerable periods of time, sometimes even during the music. On
a few occasions, the recorder adjusts the microphones and some rumbling
can be heard. The sound, more precisely Bono's singing, seems to
fade on some occasions, making the audience's raucous seem to be in the
foreground and the music way off in the background. There are a few
other blemishes that I could comment on, but let's face it -- if you've
made it this far, you are obviously bent upon obtaining this bootleg because
you (1) were at the show, (2) are a completist like me, or (3) collect
low-end recordings. Overall, this bootleg isn't quite as bad as "Zooropa
Christchurch", but it's close!
