NOTE: This is a very nice recording with crisp overall sound in very little audience noise except between songs. The music and vocals are a bit thin and the recording doesn't have a lot of low end, but this is a very solid bootleg nonetheless -- especially given how hard it is to find this gig on CDR. Some tape degradation can be heard during the first 1:30 of "Gloria" and during "The Cry". There is a noticeable edit between "October" and "New Year's Day" that sacrifices only the last second or two of the former.
In his book "U2 Live: A Concert Documentary", Pimm Jal de la Parra noted that Bono introduced "Surrender" the previous night by referring to a review of the band's first concert in Sydney during the Under Australian Skies Tour in Juke magazine. He states that Bono was "seemingly hurt by the review". Bono makes a thinly veiled reference to the review -- and other critical pieces in the media as well -- on this night when he says the following before "An Cat Dubh".
"Tonight depends on one thing. It doesn't depend on what people have said about our concerts. It doesn't depend on what the press have written about our concerts. It depends on the music."
Before "Surrender" Bono says "This the last concert for U2 here in Melbourne", thereby authenticating the date of this recording. He then goes on to say:
"I'd really like to take advantage of the atmosphere and just try to talk a bit this evening and try to tell you a little bit about, uh...Usually we just keep quiet because we're much better at playing music than talking about it. This song I want to talk about because, this song, was in some ways, it was the key to our last record. And everyone is talking about the violence of our last record. This song is not about that at all. This song is about somebody on top of a tall building in New York. There are two songs on the LP 'War' that are about this person. A song called 'Surrender'. A song called 'Red Light'. This song is 'Surrender'".
"40" is definitely from a different source than the rest of this recording. The sound on this track is much more full than on the rest of this recording.
