Take two.
About a year and a half ago, I torrented this show here from JP's master which he had transferred and converted to CD using Adobe Audition. But JP himself was never totally happy with the transfer and I remembered the tape being better than the resulting CD.
When JP recorded this he was using the identical rig that we'd eventually issue to Brother KM for his legendary (if I may) early '87 Tempe-LA run, powered by the shockingly good Aiwa CM-30 mic. I don't think there's ever been a mic that retailed for less than $50 and had this kind of low-end response. JP was positioned on the front row of the balcony at the Civic and pretty much nailed the show. There are a couple of very minor glitches and a brief gap to flip during "Bad," otherwise it's all here.
So last week JP gave me the master tape and suggested I give it a fresh spin on the azimuth-adjusting CR-7A. The results are here and I think we've got a significant upgrade. Sample provided and if I can find a sample of the old one I'll post that too but don't count on it.
Sounding very nice indeed.
NOTE: A very nice recording from a leg of The Unforgettable Fire Tour for which very few exist. Definitely one of the better audience recordings from the entire tour...and probably the best bootleg currently available from the third leg. The JEMS gang always seems to produce high quality recordings, so this isn't much of a surprise. The overall sound is very clean and powerful, with all instruments clearly audible and Bono's vocals featuring prominently in the mix. About the only problem that I noticed during my spot check is that there is some minor shifting on occasion.
It sounds like the mic jack was bumped around 3:00 of "11 O'Clock Tick Tock", as some rumbling is audible for a few seconds. There is a small skip at 5:57 of "Bad" due to a tape flip.
NOTE (by JP, posted in Dime-A-Dozen Torrent 196912): The back story: A year ago Butterking took my master cassette of this Unforgettable Fire gig and had a second pass at making it sound like we knew it should. Previously, I had a go using Adobe Audition, but the results were just so-so. So, using the source, Butterking used the azimuth-adjusting CR-7A. Presto! Just like being there.
I had
a very good seat in the balcony, a few rows up and maybe a half-section
back on the Edge’s side. Being close to the PA made for clear sound, and
I had good equipment: a D-6 (not a D-3 as the previous txt. file suggests)
borrowed from my friend Walter the K. My trusty Aiwa CM-30 mic had remarkable
ability to capture the low end: check out Adam’s phat and liquid bass lines.
I was happy with the tape at the time, and thrilled with Butterking’s remastered
sound. I had to flip the tape during “Bad” so you’ll hear a brief gap.
