NOTE: I received this recording from Scott Zumsteg, webmaster of The Joshua Tree Tour Preservation Project web site. Those of you who have traded with Scott know that he only works with top notch recordings. Here are his comments regarding this one:
"This
is one of the best audience recordings of the fall tour. Done with a D6,
ECM 909 Microphone close to the speakers, this
1st
gen tape is very clear. The only drawback to this show is that it is missing
With or Without You. While Pimm Jals book
says
that song was not played that night, I think that account was based on
the same tape. There is a cut right after Running to
Stand
Still and before People Get Ready where With or Without You should have
been. But overall this is a good tape of a
straightforward
jt fall tour set."
The sound of this recording is crisp and clear. Crowd noise is relegated almost exclusively to the background and is quite minimal. There is a slight skip just as "MLK" begins, but only the first note of the intro suffers. A similar blemish occurs between "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Exit", but this one lasts for a few seconds. Also of note, the band screws up the intro to "In God's Country" and Bono starts the song again, saying "One more time". The recording then skips a fairly large portion of the second take and picks up again halfway through the second verse with "She is liberty. She comes to rescue me...". There is a bit of interference between "Bad" and "October", but only crowd noise is affected. A skip occurs during "The Star Spangled Banner", but the intro to "Bullet the Blue Sky" comes out virtually unscathed.
All in all, this recording is far superior to "Joshua Tree Baton Rouge" and is, as Scott mentions, "one of the best audience recordings of the fall tour".
