NOTE: A very nice recording of the final concert of the War Tour. Sound quality and clarity are both excellent. Audience noise is minimal and can only be heard in the background between songs. Both the vocals and the music come through quite clearly.
Disregard the setlist for this show that is printed in U2 Live: A Concert Documentary. Pimm Jal de la Parra had done an excellent job compiling information for this very useful book, but there was obviously a dearth of material at his disposal for these Tokyo gigs. The only commentary provided for them is for the first night (which happens to be available on the commercial bootleg "Live In Tokyo 1983"), so I feel confident in assuming that he had difficulty finding a reliable source for information on the other Tokyo gigs. Anyway, on this recording, after "A Day Without Me", Bono says "Tonight is the last night...the last concert for U2 in your country, Japan."....this would seem to be a pretty good indication that this is truly the 29 November 1983 concert.
Some other distinguishing characteristics of this recording:
At the beginning of "Out of Control", Bono says:
"Thank you! We would like to say
goodnight to you. We would like to
thank you very much for two weeks in Japan.
We would like to thank
everybody from the road crew. We
would like to thank everybody in this
building. We would like to get a
new singer. Goodbye. 'Out of
Control'".
Before "A Celebration" Bono says:
"This is a song played only once before.
We played it last night for
the first time in a year and a half.
This is a song about (inaudible).
This is called 'A Celebration'".
After the first few notes of "I Will Follow",
the band stops playing and
Bono says:
"This song is for our manager Paul McGuinness"
Also of note is Bono singing the words
"The Unforgettable Fire" repeatedly during "I Will Follow"....a sign of
things to come from the band's next album.
