NOTE: I'm not exactly sure what generation VHS tape this recording was transferred to DVD from. My source tells me it is from the "sepia master tape", but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is from the true master. Given that the sharpness of the images in this footage is a bit lacking, I'm guessing that this recording comes from maybe a third generation copy of the true master tape. While this third generation copy may have been used to create the "sepia master", it is not a master recording in my book.
Copies of the Stockholm '92 pro-shot video have been floating around in rare trade circles for years. The recording was made by the winner of an MTV Europe contest who had the satellite feed of the concert beamed directly to his house. The rumor that I have heard is that the guy has made so many copies of his master video that the color has worn off his tape. Almost every copy that is available in rare trade circles is black and white. A trader once loaned me a color copy, but the color was so faint that I actually like the black and white version better.
The person who made the "sepia master tape" obviously wasn't a big fan of black and white. He edited the recording and gave it a sepia, or reddish, tint. Whether you prefer this to black and white is a matter of personal preference. Personally, I don't think the sepia is any better.
As I mentioned previously, the picture quality is a bit poorer than on many pro-shot videos. The clarity is a bit lacking and the picture is somewhat dark. Another noteworthy item is that during lengthy portions of the video (including most of the first half of the concert), one layer of footage is superimposed over another. While this editing probably looked really cool on the color master tape, it occasionally makes it difficult to focus in on one layer on this sepia recording. You can get a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about from my screen captures (see link below).
The audio on this recording is excellent. The main menu allows you to jump directly to each song. Track indices are in the proper positions between songs. "Mysterious Ways" and "One" are out of order on the menu.
While certainly not the best pro-stot video
out there, this is still a very cool DVD. Most U2 fans love the ZooTV
era, and this is one of only two pro-shot videos from 1992 (the other being
16 August 1992). The "Dancing ZooTV" DVD includes "Who's Gonna Ride
Your Wild Horses", which wasn't played on 16 August 1992.
