NOTE: This bootleg is what every U2 bootleg collector dreams of, a previously unknown soundboard recording that one happens to appear out of nowhere. This recording originally surfaced on www.shnflac.net, then was posted on U2Torrents, and finally spread to Dime A Dozen.
The overall mix is quite unique and heavily favors Bono's vocals and Larry's drums. The recording has a lot of reverb, with Bono's vocals almost having an echoing quality to them at times. Larry's bass drum can be heard very clearly, but it's the piercing sound of his snares that make this recording unlike any other I have ever heard. Larry's drums are so crystal clear on this recording that you very quickly get a feel for the "military style" that was the hallmark to his early playing. Note what sounds like a virtual drum roll -- it's very quiet -- at the beginning of several songs, including "The Electric Co." and "Twilight".
It is somewhat strange to listen to Bono try to interact with the crowd on only the band's second trip to the U.S. There isn't anywhere near as much banter as we're now used to. During this concert Bono struggles to create that connection with the crowd that eventually helped U2 become the biggest rock band in the world. At the beginning of "Out of Control" he virtually pleads with the fans in attendance to get into the concert, saying "If you're getting bored sitting down, this is the place for you. Knock the walls down!"
There are a few notable flaws, including
significant dropouts at 3:42 (during "11 O'Clock Tick Tock") and 17:53
(during "Another Time, Another Place"). There is also a small pop/diginoise
at 0:08 as Bono kicks off the concert with a brief speech.
